O&O DiskImage 5: Security for company data, independent of the hardware
Machine Independent Restore (M.I.R), Universal Restore, Dissimilar Hardware Restore.
Same benefit, different names.
Same benefits, different costs.
What M.I.R does is provide you the option to restore your servers to different hardware if it breaks down (i.e Dell to HP).
Often, we look to keep data secure and minimize server downtime by having spare servers and with a backup program.
Now maybe let’s run through a couple of key functions necessary in a backup software for the budding SME.
- Able to backup data
- Able to backup system for restoration
- Able to do differentials/incrementals to save space
- Able to schedule backups for automation
- Imaging without downtime (because administrators have to sleep too!)
- Security of data
- Confidentiality of data
- Virtualization support
- Local, Reliable support
- Affordable Price
Let’s see how O&O matches up.
- Able to backup data – obviously
- Able to backup system for restoration – Yea
- Able to do differentials/incrementals to save space – uh-huh
- Able to schedule backups for automation – Job assistant
- Imaging without downtime (because administrators have to sleep too!) – Live Imaging, Check!
- Network management – Install, manage and reporting. Check! Check! Check!
- Security of data – Checksums and Validation Pre and Post jobs
- Confidentiality of data – Encryption
- Virtualization support – Convert to and from virtual hard disks (VHD) to physical
- Local, Reliable support – That’s us!
- Affordable Price – Definitely!
So, what’s affordable really?
Consider purchasing backup software for a server that comes with M.I.R. from other vendors
Company A: Priced between 40% more(if you’re willing to sacrifice some functions) to more than 400% the price of O&O DiskImage
Company S: Priced between 150% to 250% of O&O price
Sure you say, there are differences between the products, that’s why the price is different.
And of course, as mentioned earlier, if you’re a local SME and looking for a simple backup solution, do you really need all the bells and whistles and also the hefty pricetag?
Not convinced? Need more support? Call us or drop us a line at marketing@qcomgroup.com for further discussion.

For partners: Making the most of an OS/PC upgrade/migration opportunity
I’m counting two opportunities here.
1) Users who are currently using XP and are looking to upgrade their OS’s due to the drop in support from Microsoft.
2) Maybe your customer has decided to upgrade his hardware which comes together with OEM windows 7 installed.
First off, I’m guessing that most people will not be missing Windows Vista as they look to Windows 7.
As of 2009, PC World stats of the market share of Operating Systems are below.
75% of PC users are still booting up to the familiar sound of Windows XP.
And the complication is here, there is NO direct upgrade (a.k.a in-place upgrade) to Windows 7 from Windows XP.
This means that users who are using Windows XP will have to go through a lot of hassle, not to mention the risk of having to make sure the existing applications on their desktop/servers have to work on the Windows 7. And then, what if something, somewhere goes wrong? The upgrade window for most companies is not that long, and if things screw up, there should be some sort of backup plan to revert back to the original system. All this is cost for both the system integrator and the customers in terms of time and money.
As for the second scenario even with Windows 7 conveniently coming together with the system, it still leaves the programs, user accounts, settings and data migration unsettled.
This can only mean one thing. Massive opportunity.
QCOM Group proposes a solution: Migration Kit for Windows 7.
This little package is basically 2 parts.
1) Laplink PC Mover is a Migration Software. PC Mover handles the migration of your user accounts, programs etc to the new OS / PC / Harddisk.
2) O&O DiskImage is a disk imaging product. It
- backs up your entire system before making the leap to Windows 7 and enables you to perform a restore should anything unexpected occur
- makes the legacy system and data available for retrievable, mounted as a drive on the new system.
- allows you to continue using it as a backup/imaging product on the new system, driving costs down for a backup software.
We have special packages for partners of course. Simply drop me a line at marketing@qcomgroup.com for more information.
Did I miss something? Comments, suggestions welcome as always.

Uses of Disk Imaging – O&O DiskImage
Backup is obviously a common service that our partners provide.
We would also like to see greater use of disk imaging, that ensures not just the data is kept safe but that the system can be brought back up in the shortest amount of time following a system failure.
Here are some common scenarios where Disk Image comes in handy.
